Ministry for Migrants and Refugees

LWC has served as Partner for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) for over two decades and is one of only a few organizations in Trinidad and Tobago that works with persons in need of international protection and other categories of vulnerable migrants.

In recent years, LWC recognized the need to consolidate its work with asylum-seekers and refugees, and also to promote better understanding of and empathy for refugees amongst the general public. As a result, LWC established a Ministry for Migrants and Refugees (MMR) in order to attend to the diverse needs of a growing number of asylum-seekers and refugees finding their way to Trinidad and Tobago.

LWC’s Ministry for Migrants and Refugees adheres to Catholic Social Teaching and Principles and International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and Principles. Activities and programmes include reception (pre-registration), psychosocial care, case management, humanitarian assistance, shelter and education programming, public awareness and advocacy are also coordinated.

LWC sustains the MMR through a combination of resources, including UNHCR, UNICEF and other donor funds in combination with its own funding, obtained through a network of generous supporters and through small income-generating activities.
