Sold and resold in the markets at El Obeid and Khartoum, finally purchased in\u00a01883\u00a0by Callisto Legnani,\u00a0Italian\u00a0consul who planned to free her. She accompanied Legnani to\u00a0Italy\u00a0in\u00a01885, and worked as a nanny for the family of Augusto Michieli. She was treated well in\u00a0Italy\u00a0and grew to love the country. An adult\u00a0convert\u00a0the\u00a0Christianity, she joined the\u00a0Church\u00a0on\u00a09 January\u00a01890, she took the name of\u00a0<em>Josephine<\/em>\u00a0as a symbol of her new life.<\/p>\n<p>She entered the\u00a0<em>Institute of Canossian Daughters of Charity<\/em>\u00a0in\u00a0Venice,\u00a0Italy\u00a0in\u00a01893, taking her vows on\u00a08 December\u00a01896\u00a0in\u00a0Verona,\u00a0Italy\u00a0and serving as a Canossian Sister for the next fifty years. Her gentle presence, her warm, amiable voice, and her willingness to help with any menial task were a comfort to the\u00a0poor\u00a0and suffering people who came to the door of the Institute. After a biography of her was published in\u00a01930, she became a noted and sought after speaker, raising funds to support missions.<\/p>\n<p>Her\u00a0feast\u00a0has been designated the\u00a0<em>International Day of Prayer to Stop Human Trafficking<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>She was born in 1868 at Oglassa, Darfur, Sudan and died on 8 February, 1947 of natural causes in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Readings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O God, Father of mercy, you have given us Blessed Josephine Bakhita as a \u201cuniversal sister\u201d, an evangelical model of humble faith and ardent charity.
